Blog #4- Reading and all its beauty
When was the last time you picked up a book to read that wasn’t for a class? For me, it was last week. I enjoy reading as a hobby and find it as a good way to relax. With all the different entertainment and technology we have today, I was curious how many people still read books. Whattpad asked people under the age of 26 how often they read a week. 55% said they read once or more a week and 40% read every day. I don’t know how many people participated in the survey, but the percentage surprised me. Let’s dive into the reasons why reading is good.
Starting off, reading is important, because it strengthens brain activity. According to the University of the People “Reading is a neurobiological process that works out your brain muscles.” This can decrease the rate your memory fades and slow down cognitive decline. Other benefits of reading include better communication skills, better vocabulary, entertainment, teaching good values, enhanced creativity, and lower stress.
One of the big differences between books and movies is imagination. Books make you use your imagination because you have all these descriptive words, but no picture. You can make up an entirely different world in your head, depending on the book. Imagination influences everything we do, think about, and create. That’s a lot of things influenced by imagination and we can improve it by reading. Imagination is key to innovation and a strong trait in leaders. If you're looking for something to enhance your life, reading is a great option.
“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island.” ― Walt Disney
There are so many different genres of literature, it makes me think if anything can be good to read. Books have different age-appropriate content, but any reading is good for the brain. It is also good to read a variety of genres to expand your knowledge. Different genres “will expand your area of learning new things and skills.” It is good to be learning new things to keep your brain forming new connections and feeling accomplished. I definitely feel accomplished, along with other emotions, after finishing a book.
Here are some of my book recommendations if you are feeling inspired to read or looking for something new. Starting off with the classic, Harry Potter. This series is popular for a reason and definitely worth the hype. It is a very well-written fantasy series. Another genre I enjoy is scientific fiction. The author, Lisa Genova, has many books that explain different neurological diseases through a story. There are so many different genres and types of writing, you just have to find one you enjoy.
Reading has many benefits and is good to keep around. Also, online libraries and eBooks make it easy to read digitally. Make a goal to start reading more!
I hope you enjoyed the blog!
